31st May has been regarded as the official World
No Tobacco Day by the World Health Organisation to draw global attention
to the tobacco. VHAI celebrated the smoke free endeavor enthusiastically
by large-scale campaigns across the states to generating awareness
by a people’s movement on the deep-rooted connection between
tobacco and chronic diseases and poverty, the rights of non-smokers,
need for smoke-free environments and government initiatives on legislation,
monitoring and enforcement. All addressing the issue of mobilizing
civil society groups in maintaining vigilance towards making India
tobacco free. The states that participated were Orissa, Kerala,
Punjab, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh & Assam. Strategies employed by them were of sensitization,
capacity building, advocacy and coalition building.
