Uttar Pradesh Voluntary Health Association (UPVHA) in collaboration with Voluntary Health Association of India (VHAI) organized a Media Sensitizing Meeting on ‘Child labour and Child Rights concerns in the Bidi industry’ on 16th March at UP Press Club, Lucknow.
The meeting was attended by Ms. Ruchira Neog, Media Coordinator, VHAI, Mr. J.P. Sharma, Executive Director, UPVHA, Mr. Ashutosh Singh, President, Indian Media Center for Journalist, Mr. Praveen and Mr. Arif from Youth Round Table Society, Faizabad and Ms. Suvidha Tripathi, Programme Associate, UPVHA

The objective of the meeting was to sensitize the media on the issue of Child Labour in Uttar Pradesh, particularly children working in the Bidi Industry and also to discuss about the PIL filed in Supreme Court under Article 32 of the constitution of India to prohibit Child Labour and to improve the working condition of bidi workers.
Mr. J.P. Sharma, Executive Director, UPVHA gave a presentation on "Overview of status of Child Labour in Bidi industry in Uttar Pradesh"
Ms. Ruchira Neog, Media Coordinator, VHAI, New Delhi discussed about PIL filed on Child Labour in the Supreme Court to prohibit Child Labour and to improve the working condition of bidi workers. |

Mr. J.P. Sharma shared the recommendations came out from the Round Table Meeting on Child Rights and Child Labour, which was earlier, organized at Lucknow (on 25th February 2010) by UPVHA with support of Voluntary Health Association of India. Leading NGOs and Civil Society Bodies from different parts of Uttar Pradesh involved in working on issues of Child Rights and Child Labour and the Deputy Labour Commissioner participated in the Round Table. The Round Table resulted in specific recommendations to be taken up by all stakeholders to address the issues of Child Labour in the Bidi Industry in Uttar Pradesh.

They shared that there are more than 10,000 bidi workers are working in Faizabad where 95% Bidi rollers are women and more than 2300 children are engaged in the bidi industry. There was one on one interaction between the speakers and the media.
Through the Open House, the Media present were given the opportunity to interact and ask relevant questions in regard to the Child Labour status in the state, the role played by NGOs and Civil Society in combating the same and the level of intervention and initiatives at the policy level of the concerned government departments/Ministries.
After the event, the media interacted with the experts and raised several concerns. The press conference was concluded with a vote of thanks by Executive Director, UPVHA with a request to the Media to play an active role to advocate Child Rights, and to join the campaign against all forms of Child Labour and particularly the involvement of children in hazardous industries like Bidi Rolling. |
