GOI Initiatives > The Tobacco Scenario

International Front

  • Tobacco contributes to 5 million deaths per year globally.
  • According to World Health Organization (WHO), tobacco kills more people annually than AIDS, alcohol, other addictions (drugs) and accidents put together. And this figure is expected to rise to 10 million tobacco deaths annually by 2025.
  • 500 million die prematurely due to tobacco use; most of these are children and young adults of today.
National Front

  • One-fifth of all worldwide deaths attributed to tobacco occur in India; more than 8, 00,000 people die and 12 million people fall ill due to tobacco use each year.
  • India could see an even greater increase in tobacco-related morbidity and mortality rates by the year 2050 and beyond. 50% of cancer deaths, majority of the cardio-vascular and lung disorders and other related diseases are attributed to tobacco consumption.
  • Government spends 27,000 crore rupees each year to treat tobacco related disease. Since other forms of tobacco consumption like chewing are widely prevalent in India in addition to smoking cigarettes and beedis, India ranks second to China in tobacco related deaths.
