May
31 is World No Tobacco Day
A day to focus global attention to the devastating toll of tobacco use around the world and the urgent need for nations to implement proven measures to reduce tobacco use and save lives. The event is sponsored by the World Health Organization and this year's theme is
"Tobacco-Free Youth: Breaking the Tobacco Marketing Net".
According to the WHO, tobacco use will kill one billion people worldwide this century unless nations act now to save lives. This year's theme is an important reminder that most people start smoking before the age of 18, and almost a quarter begin using tobacco before the age of 10, according to the WHO. The tobacco industry spends billions of dollars each year to market its deadly and addictive products, much of it aimed at youth. To carry forward the anti-tobacco message, VHAI is conducting a range of activities in 11 states in collaboration with WHO and Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) to generate awareness among the people.
