November 13, 2009: Roundtable Meeting on Child Rights and Child Labour
   
 
Voluntary Health Association of India (VHAI) organized a meeting on child rights and child labour on 12th November, 09 at the head office, Delhi in which several organization working on child rights and issues like Prayas, CRY - Child Rights and You, Butterflies, Campaign Against Child Labour (CACL), Pratham, Bachpan Bachao Andolan (BBA), Save the Children - India, National Coalition for Education (NCE), Bihar Voluntary Health Association (BVHA), All India Women's Conference (AIWC), Youth Round Table (YRT), UNICEF, Lawyers' Collective participated.

The overall objective of the meeting was to bring child rights groups on a common platform to discuss mutual concerns and carve out strategies for VHAI's ongoing work on child labour as well as plan future collaborative campaigns.
The round table meeting was followed up by the screening of “Turning their life into Ashes”, a short film on child labour in bidi industry in Murshidabad district of West Bengal. The film emerged out of a study conducted by the Voluntary Health Association of India on the impact of bidi industry in the lives of the workers and their families in Murshidabad district of West Bengal and Anand district of Gujarat.

A major highlight of the workshop was a joint press release on the exploitation of children by the bidi industry, which was issued by VHAI and the participating agencies on the eve of Nov 14 - Childrens’ Day.
