Bloomberg Initiative
The Bloomberg Global Initiative to Reduce Tobacco Use
Funded by Michael R. Bloomberg and managed by the International Union against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease and the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids
A global initiative to reduce tobacco use in low- and middle-income countries was launched in 2006 with funds from Michael R. Bloomberg. A competitively awarded grants program is an important part of the Initiative. The grants program supports projects to develop and deliver high-impact tobacco control interventions.
The grants program is managed by the International Union against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease (the Union) and the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids.
In the first round of the grant program in 2007, a total of 42 grants were awarded in 22 countries.
The process for application of grants
- The grants are given for capacity building and advocacy programmes.
- For a short-term: one or two years.
- The funding is given up to US $500,000 per year.
- Two rounds funding in 2007 and in 2008 January, June.
- Open to all low- and middle-income countries for projects that lead to improvements in:
- Tax and price measures.
- Smoke-free workplaces and public places.
- Direct and indirect advertising bans.
- Other regulatory/legislative initiatives.
- Effective, long term government-sponsored and funded mass media campaigns and programs.

- 24 Grant Agreements have been signed
Round 2
- 522 Project Ideas were submitted
- 420 Project Ideas were eligible
- 71 Projects Ideas are invited to full proposal
