May 31, 2010: Voluntary Health Association of India (VHAI) collaborated with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), Government of India and the World Health Organisation (WHO) for organizing a programme on the occasion of World No Tobacco day, 2010 at Lady Hardinge Medical College, Delhi
 
Voluntary Health Association of India (VHAI) collaborated with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), Government of India and the World Health Organisation (WHO) for organizing a programme on the occasion of World No Tobacco day, 2010 at Lady Hardinge Medical College, Delhi. VHAI was involved in the media management and putting up an exhibition highlighting the different provisions of the Tobacco Control Act and adverse harmful effects of tobacco use.

The programme was attended by Dr. Sangay Thingley, Acting WHO Representative to India, Director General of Health Services(DGHS) Dr.R.K.Srivastava,the Hon'ble Justice Gyan Sudha Misra, Supreme Court of India, Addl Secretary HFW, Shri Desi Raju and Ms. Barkha Singh, Chairperson, Delhi Commission for Women.

A fact sheet on the issue of women and tobacco was developed by VHAI team and was distributed to all the participants during the programme. The government advertisement on the occasion of the WNTD was also prepared by VHAI.

A panel discussion was also organized on the occasion wherein Ms. Bhavna Mukhopadhyay, Executive Director, VHAI participated in the panel discussion and deliberated on the role of Civil Society for tobacco control.

School children enacted skits on the dangers and risks of tobacco consumption. The print and electronic media proactively covered all the events.

VHAI also participated in the WNTD activities organized by the Delhi Government at the Secretariat wherein the Chief Minister of Delhi, Smt Sheila Dixit and Health minister Prof. Kiran Walia were the Chief Guests. On this occasion a model Community based Tobacco cessation Centre was launched. The Chief Minister also inaugurated the website of the 'Smoke free Delhi'. The events received very good coverage in both the electronic and print media.
